About Cloud and Water Zen

Rev. 'Genjo' McGuire began sitting Zazen in 1984 with his father Ken Hogaku Shozen McGuire Roshi. He spent the next twenty years in a casual practice, doing retreats with his parents, reading Zen books and following the precepts as best as he was able. After moving to Santa Fe in 2004, he sought a formal teacher and began practicing at Prajna Zendo of the White Plum Asanga in the lineage of Hakuyu Taizen Maezumi Roshi. In 2012, Genjo's parents died within days of each other and while taking care of funeral arrangements, Genjo re-connected with one of his dad's disciples, Harvey 'Daiho' Hilbert Roshi, and began formal study with him in the Order of Clear Mind Zen. Genjo practiced with other teachers between 2015 and 2021 returning to Daiho Roshi in 2021. Genjo took Shuke Tokudo in 2023 and assisted Daiho Roshi with Zen services and leading sesshins. Rev. Genjo now lives in Ruidoso, NM, and opened the Cloud and Water Zendo in 2026 to serve the local community and surrounding areas.
